Premise Of The Story
Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a woman in her thirties from New York City, is sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security women’s federal prison in upstate New York. Chapman was convicted of transferring a bag full of cocaine money for her partner, international drug smuggler Alex Vause (Laura Prepon).
The crime had occurred ten years before the start of the Series, and Chapman had since settled into a tranquil, law-abiding life among New York’s upper-middle class. Her surprise arrest upends her ties with her fiancé, family, and friends. Chapman is reunited with Vause in prison (who mentioned Chapman in her trial, culminating in Chapman’s incarceration), and the two re-examine their relationship. Simultaneously, Chapman and the other inmates seek to deal with the myriad, inherent problems of incarceration.

Episodes frequently include flashbacks to significant events in the lives of various inmates and correctional officers. These flashbacks usually show how an inmate got into prison or enhance a character’s backstory after MCC’s failure to handle an inmate’s death at the hands of a guard in the fourth season, the convicts’ revolt against the guards, wardens, and system in the fifth season.
The aftermath of the incident is depicted in the sixth season. Several offenders, including Chapman, are sent to Litchfield Maximum Security. The seventh season concludes the stories of many inmates. Chapman and Vause’s on-again, the off-again relationship continues.
The season depicts how some prisoners are able to advance beyond their time in jail, whilst others are captured by the system and are unable to progress due to their own defects and systemic problems in the structure of US society and its judicial system. In addition to the established setting of Litchfield Max, a significant portion of the season takes place in a newly established ICE detention center for detained presumed illegal immigrants, highlighting their struggles and lack of access to outside help, owing in large part to complete or extreme disregard for the law.
Throughout the series, we see how the various forms of corruption, funding cuts by the corporate owner to increase profit by millions, privatization of prison, overcrowding, guard brutality, and racial discrimination (among other issues) affect the prisoners’ safety, health, and well-being; the lives of correctional officers; and the prison’s basic inability to fulfill its fundamental legal and ethical obligations as a corrections institution.
