She first appeared in Captain America: The winter soldier in 2014. In Disney Plus’ WandaVision streaming series, Wanda Maximoff became one of the MCU’s most fascinating lead characters, laying the groundwork for the current Multiverse-centric period of the MCU.

Scarlet Witch has been making waves in Marvel continuity for decades, both as a member of the Avengers and in her own solo exploits, in the original comic books. Wanda and her family have quietly established themselves as the backbone of Marvel Comics.

Wanda Maximoff in Doctor Strange and Multiverse of Madness

As the Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen has wreaked havoc on the Marvel Universe. She put on her antihero backpack in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff played her part until the proper moment came. The sequel and Disney+’s WandaVision gave her her big-screen debut. But, for the actress, playing the Marvel sorceress has been a double-edged sword. The role catapulted her to Hollywood’s A-list, but it came at the cost of her ability to express herself as an actress.

Doctor Steven Strange wanders the multiverse safeguarding his newest powered colleague, America Chavez, from Wanda Maximoff in Marvel’s latest MCU installment. Wanda, who has completely accepted her new identity as the Scarlet Witch, longs for America’s power—the capacity to travel across multiverses by punching portals anywhere she pleases.

When she first meets America, she is troubled by her past and the terrible tragedies that have resulted from her inability to control her abilities. Wanda intends to exploit America’s fear of her own skills. While Wanda appears to be the only one who can protect America from the demons pursuing her at first, it isn’t long before we understand that Wanda is the one who has unleashed the demons on America. Wanda’s endgame is the same as it was in WandaVision: her children.

Did Wanda die?

In the film’s last act, America regains control of her abilities and sends Wanda to Earth-838 via the cursed guts of Mount Wundagore. She’d utilized the Darkhold’s dream walking abilities earlier in the film to possess her Earth-838 self in order to find America; upon seeing Earth-838’s Billy and Tommy, she seeks to reunite with them. When she attacks their mother (her 838 self), they become terrified of her.

The Scarlet Witch declares that no one will ever use the Darkhold’s power again when her Earth-838 self says, “Know that they’ll be loved.” She keeps her word and collapses Mt. Wundagore, destroying all copies of the Darkhold across the multiverse and burying herself under the mountain’s bowels.

For all intents and purposes, Wanda’s time in the MCU appears to be coming to an end. In comic books, however, the Scarlet Witch has escaped death’s clutches.
