The Tamil movie, “Soorarai Pottru” was the only Indian film that has been made eligible for the nomination of Best Picture at the Oscars 2021. Yes, indeed the movie is based on a real story. It is based on the life events of the retired army officer, Gita Gopinath who is also the founder of Air Deccan Airlines. The movie was based on his autobiography named Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey, the book was released in 2011. The book narrates his journey from riding a bullock card when he was a young boy to owning an airline in his name. He definitely came a long way.
His whole name is Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar Gopinath, he was born in the year 1952 in a small village named Gorur situated in Karnataka. He was homeschooled by his father and he was the second of eight children with his parents. After a few years of being homes schooled, he was enrolled in a Kannada-medium school in class 5. Later, in 1962, he enrolled in Bijapur’s Sainik School, where young boys are trained to join the armed forces. He then passed the National Defence Academy exams, graduated from the Indian Military Academy, and served in the Indian Army for eight years. He also fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. At the age of twenty-eight he took early retirement and then he tried a lot of businesses however, he ventured into the aviation sector in the year 1996.
Suriya is the lead actor here, he is playing the role of Maara, who is a young man who has a big dream to fly. He wants to fly a low-cost airline someday.
